Trim, underlayment & cost
A metal roof estimate starts with the actual sloping roof area, the roof-plane length from eave to ridge or high side, and the panel's net installed coverage width. For a simple gable roof, divide the eave width by the panel coverage to find panels per slope, multiply by two roof planes, then add a suitable cut/spare allowance. The calculator above also estimates panel length, total panel lineal feet, trim, underlayment, exposed screws or standing-seam clips, and a 2026 U.S. installed-cost planning range.
How to Use the Metal Roof Calculator
This metal roof calculator is designed to answer two closely related questions: how much metal roofing material you may need and what the roof may cost as an early budgeting estimate. It works with exposed-fastener panels, standing seam and custom metal panels, while keeping the product-specific values editable.
- Choose your measurement method. Start from Building Dimensions, one or more Roof Planes, or a Known Roof Area.
- Enter the roof geometry. For a simple building, add length, width, pitch, overhang and choose Gable, Hip or Shed / Lean-to.
- Select the metal roofing system. Choose exposed-fastener, standing seam with clips, concealed direct-fastened or custom.
- Enter the net panel coverage width. Use the installed coverage from the manufacturer's specification, not simply the raw sheet width.
- Review the takeoff. The calculator returns panel count, panel length, roof area, trim, underlayment and fastener planning quantities.
- Review the cost range. Choose a 2026 installed-cost preset or enter your own low and high rate per square foot.
If you only need roof surface area, use the Roof Area Calculator. If you do not know the roof pitch, use the Roof Pitch Calculator first.
How Many Metal Roof Panels Do I Need?
For a simple rectangular roof plane, the basic panel count depends on the width of the roof along the eave and the net coverage width of one installed panel.
Round that result up to a whole panel. For a symmetrical gable roof with two equal planes:
Then apply the cut/spare allowance:
The final package quantity is rounded up to a whole panel.
Metal Roof Panel Length Calculator
Panel quantity tells you how many panel columns are needed. Panel length tells you how long those panels need to run from the eave to the ridge or high side.
For a simple centred gable:
A shed or lean-to uses the full horizontal width from low side to high side rather than half the span. This is the same roof geometry explained in How to Calculate Roof Pitch.
Metal Roof Calculator by Square Feet
If you already know the actual sloping roof area, the Known Roof Area method acts as a metal roof square foot calculator. It uses your roof area, average panel length and net coverage width to estimate an equivalent number of panels.
This method is useful for early material planning, but it does not generate a fabrication cut list. Two roofs can have the same total square footage but need very different panel lengths because of valleys, hips, dormers or intersecting roof planes.
For complex roof geometry, calculate or measure each roof plane separately before ordering.
Metal Roof Material Calculator
A useful metal roof material calculator should not stop at surface area. A typical panel-roof takeoff may need:
Counted from roof-plane width, installed coverage width and the number of roof planes.
Measured in linear feet along ridges and sloping hips.
Measured along the low roof edges where panels terminate at the eave.
Measured along sloping gable edges where applicable.
Entered separately for roofs with valleys because a simple rectangular roof has none.
Estimated from actual roof surface area using editable effective roll coverage.
Closures, sealants, butyl tape, snow retention, pipe flashings, gutters, transitions, wall flashings and other accessories are project-specific and are not safely inferred from roof area alone.
Exposed-Fastener Metal Roof Calculator
Exposed-fastener panels include corrugated, ribbed and R/PBR-style profiles where fasteners pass through the panel into the substrate or framing. They are often wider than architectural standing-seam panels, so fewer panel columns may be required.
Metal Sales currently specifies a 36-inch coverage width for its PBR/R-Panel profile. The same manufacturer recommends a minimum roof slope of 1:12 for that particular panel, with additional sidelap requirements on lower slopes.
Those figures are examples of why the calculator keeps both panel width and fastener inputs editable. Another exposed-fastener profile may have different coverage, slope, substrate and fastening requirements.
Standing Seam Metal Roof Calculator
A standing seam metal roof calculator needs to distinguish panel geometry from the fastening system. Standing-seam roofs use concealed attachment, but not all standing-seam products attach in the same way.
Some systems use separate clips. Others are clipless and fasten through a concealed flange. Panel widths and minimum slopes also vary by profile.
Current McElroy Metal examples illustrate that range:
| Example standing-seam system | Panel widths | Published minimum slope | Attachment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medallion-Lok | 12, 16 or 18 in | 3:12 | Hidden clips |
| 138T | 12, 16 or 18 in | 1:12 | Concealed mechanically seamed system |
| 238T | 16, 18 or 24 in depending on configuration | 1/2:12 | Concealed mechanically seamed system |
| Meridian | 12 or 16 in | 3:12 | Clipless concealed flange |
These are manufacturer examples, not universal standing-seam specifications. Always use the exact product's tested installation requirements.
Standing Seam Metal Roof Cost Calculator
Cost is one of the largest search intents around metal roofing, so the calculator includes a separate installed-cost planning range rather than forcing users to perform another calculation.
Current 2026 U.S. guides show that cost varies sharply by metal and system. Modernize lists common steel standing seam around $8 to $16 per square foot installed. Angi currently reports approximately $10 to $16 per ft² for standing-seam steel, $11 to $18 for aluminum, and around $25 to $35 for zinc or copper standing seam.
| Metal roofing system | 2026 installed planning range | 2,000 ft² example |
|---|---|---|
| Exposed-fastener / corrugated steel | $6–$12 / ft² calculator preset | $12,000–$24,000 |
| Standing seam steel | $8–$16 / ft² | $16,000–$32,000 |
| Standing seam aluminum | $11–$18 / ft² | $22,000–$36,000 |
| Copper / zinc standing seam | $25–$35 / ft² | $50,000–$70,000 |
The exposed-fastener preset is intentionally a narrower steel planning band than the full market range. Current Angi data puts corrugated metal broadly around $3.50–$15 per ft² depending on material and project, while Modernize reports corrugated metal around $4–$14 per ft². Use the calculator's custom cost fields when you have a local contractor rate or a different metal.
Metal Roof Cost per Square Foot Calculator
The cost result uses actual roof surface area multiplied by the selected installed low and high rate:
The calculator does not multiply the cost range by the panel waste allowance again. The installed cost rate already represents a project-level planning figure; automatically pricing every spare panel as if it created additional installed roof area could overstate the estimate.
If your goal is retail material cost only, use supplier panel pricing and trim pricing rather than the installed-cost preset.
Corrugated Metal Roof Cost Calculator
Corrugated and exposed-fastener steel are generally less expensive than standing seam because the panel system and fastening method are simpler. Current 2026 cost guides still show a wide range because corrugated roofing can be made from different metals, gauges, finishes and profiles.
Use the exposed-fastener preset as an early steel-roof estimate, then replace the low and high rates with local numbers when available. If you are comparing different systems, make sure both quotes include the same tear-off, underlayment, trim and flashing scope.
Metal Roof Calculator for a Gable Roof
A simple gable is the cleanest panel takeoff because the two main roof planes are usually rectangular.
With equal overhangs, the calculator first determines the effective roof dimensions, then:
Ridge, eave and rake trim lengths can also be derived reliably from simple gable geometry.
Metal Roof Calculator for a Hip Roof
A metal hip roof calculator is more complicated because panels shorten as they approach the hips. Total surface area is still based on the horizontal projection and common pitch factor when all planes have the same slope, but panel fabrication is not a simple repeated-length order.
For a simple rectangular hip roof, the calculator provides:
- total sloping roof area;
- a planning panel count across four roof planes;
- varying calculated panel lengths toward the hips;
- ridge length where the rectangle is longer than it is wide;
- true sloping hip lengths; and
- ridge + hip trim footage.
Pole Barn Metal Roof Calculator
The same panel-width and panel-length logic works for a simple pole barn or post-frame gable roof. Enter the building dimensions, pitch and overhang, then choose the actual exposed-fastener or standing-seam panel coverage.
What the calculator does not determine is structural purlin spacing, panel span capacity or framing design. Those values depend on panel gauge/profile, wind and snow loads, building dimensions, support conditions and tested engineering data.
Minimum Slope for a Metal Roof
There is no single minimum pitch that applies to every metal roofing product. The acceptable slope depends on the panel profile, seam design, sealant/end-lap details and tested system.
Manufacturer examples show why a universal number would be misleading:
- Metal Sales PBR/R-Panel: published minimum recommended slope of 1:12 for that system.
- McElroy Medallion-Lok: 3:12.
- McElroy 138T: 1:12.
- McElroy 238T: 1/2:12.
- Some mechanically seamed low-slope standing-seam systems are published for still lower slopes.
Metal Roof Screw Calculator
Exposed-fastener panels use visible screws through the roofing panel, but a fixed “X screws per square” rule is not universal. Fastener spacing changes with the profile, substrate, wind-uplift requirements, panel location and manufacturer details.
The calculator therefore asks for an editable planning rate in screws per roofing square:
Use this only for quantity planning. The installation pattern itself must come from the panel manufacturer's tested detail or engineered design.
Metal Sales, for example, publishes specific PBR fastener patterns and notes that special spacing may be required for certain codes and state/county specifications. That is why this tool does not attempt to select screw spacing automatically.
Standing Seam Clip Calculator
Clip-based standing-seam systems use concealed clips along panel seams. For early material planning, the calculator can estimate clip quantity from panel length and a user-entered spacing:
The result is deliberately described as approximate. Clip spacing is an engineering/install-system input, not a design recommendation from this calculator.
McElroy's Medallion-Lok documentation, for example, ties maximum clip spacing to specific UL-rated roof-deck constructions. Different substrates and uplift ratings use different spacing. Use the spacing specified for the exact tested assembly.
Metal Roof Purlin Spacing Calculator: Why It Is Not Included
Your keyword set includes metal roof purlin spacing calculator, but purlin spacing is a structural design problem rather than a material-count conversion.
Safe spacing depends on:
- metal panel profile and gauge;
- allowable panel span;
- wind uplift;
- snow and other roof loads;
- purlin material and section;
- support conditions and building geometry; and
- the governing building code and tested system.
For that reason, this calculator estimates roofing materials but does not output a structural purlin spacing. Use the panel manufacturer's load/span tables or a qualified structural designer for that part of the project.
Metal Roof Trim Calculator
Trim is measured in linear feet. The calculator can estimate the main lengths that follow directly from simple roof geometry:
- ridge / hip trim along ridge lines and sloping hips;
- eave trim along low roof edges;
- rake / gable trim along sloping gable edges; and
- valley trim entered manually when the roof contains valleys.
The result is rounded up to whole pieces. Supplier trim length, required laps and joint locations should be confirmed before ordering.
How Much Underlayment Do I Need for a Metal Roof?
The calculator estimates underlayment from roof surface area and an editable effective coverage per roll:
Use effective installed coverage after required overlaps rather than relying only on a nominal roll size. Metal roofing may also require a specific high-temperature, synthetic or self-adhered underlayment depending on the assembly and climate, so product compatibility matters.
How Much Extra Metal Roofing Should You Order?
Metal-panel waste behaves differently from asphalt-shingle waste. Long rectangular gable planes can be efficient, while hips, valleys, dormers and short irregular planes generate more angled cuts and offcuts.
The calculator uses a configurable spare / cut allowance on panel count rather than pretending one waste percentage suits every project.
Worked Example: 40 ft × 30 ft Gable Roof at 6:12
Consider the calculator's default-style example:
- building length: 40 ft;
- building width: 30 ft;
- overhang: 12 inches on all sides;
- roof pitch: 6:12;
- panel coverage: 36 inches;
- panel allowance: 5%.
First include the overhang:
A 6:12 roof has a pitch factor of approximately 1.1180:
The horizontal run for each gable slope is 16 ft:
A 36-inch panel covers 3 ft horizontally:
Add 5%:
Using the calculator's $6–$12 per ft² exposed-fastener steel planning preset gives an installed range of approximately $9,016–$18,032 before project-specific extras.
Metal Roof Cost vs Metal Roof Material Quantity
These are related but different questions:
How many panels, how long they are, how much trim, underlayment and fastening hardware may be needed.
What the completed project may cost after materials, labor, complexity, access, tear-off and local market conditions.
The Metal Roof Calculator gives both an early material takeoff and a simple installed-cost range. For a more complete replacement estimate with tear-off, decking and location inputs, use the Roofing Cost Calculator.
What This Calculator Does Not Calculate
Some keywords related to metal roofs refer to engineering or different project scopes. They should not be forced into one calculator.
It does not calculate snow loads, wind loads, roof load capacity or structural member design.
Spacing must come from structural design and the panel manufacturer's tested load/span data.
Weight varies by metal, gauge, profile and accessories. Use exact product data when structural weight matters.
Reflectance, emissivity, insulation, attic conditions, HVAC efficiency, climate and utility rates all affect energy savings.
Metal roof coating and painting are separate maintenance scopes with different coverage and preparation requirements.
Roof trusses are structural components and require appropriate design loads, spans and connection engineering.
Common Metal Roof Estimating Mistakes
Using nominal panel width instead of net coverage
The raw sheet width is not necessarily the installed roof coverage. Side seams and laps change the effective module.
Using horizontal run as panel length
Panels follow the roof slope. Convert horizontal run to sloping length with the pitch factor.
Dividing a shed roof width by two
A single-slope shed roof normally uses the full horizontal width as its run. Half-span applies to a centred symmetrical gable, not every roof.
Assuming all standing seam panels use the same width
Published standing-seam widths vary by system. Enter the exact installed module for the panel you are buying.
Assuming every standing seam roof uses clips
Some concealed systems use clips; others fasten through a concealed flange. Select the correct attachment type before relying on the fastener result.
Using a generic minimum roof pitch
Minimum slope varies significantly by panel system. Check the exact manufacturer's specification.
Ordering a hip roof from one average panel length
Hip panels shorten progressively. Use a supplier or fabricator cut list for the final order.
Metal Roof Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate how many metal roofing panels I need?
Divide the roof-plane width along the eave by the panel's net installed coverage width, round up, then multiply by the number of equivalent roof planes. Add a project-appropriate cut/spare allowance afterward.
How do I calculate metal roof panel length?
For a simple gable, multiply half the effective roof width by the pitch factor. For a shed roof, use the full horizontal run multiplied by the pitch factor.
How many square feet does a metal roof panel cover?
Multiply the installed coverage width in feet by the panel length. A 36-inch-wide panel has 3 ft of net width; a 20-ft panel therefore covers about 60 ft² before considering project cuts.
What width should I enter for metal roof panels?
Enter the net installed coverage width from the product specification. Do not automatically enter the raw coil or sheet width.
Can I use this as a standing seam metal roof calculator?
Yes. Select standing seam, enter the actual panel coverage width and use the correct attachment option. Clip-based systems can generate an approximate clip count from a user-entered spacing.
Can I use it as a metal roof cost calculator?
Yes. The calculator provides a 2026 installed-cost planning range using actual roof surface area and editable per-square-foot rates. It is not a final contractor quote.
How much does a standing seam metal roof cost in 2026?
Current national cost guides commonly put steel standing seam around $8–$16 per ft² installed, with aluminum higher and copper or zinc substantially higher. Exact local prices depend on the system and project.
Can I calculate a hip metal roof?
Yes, for a simple rectangular hip roof with one uniform pitch. The calculator provides a planning panel count and hip/ridge geometry, but final hip panels require a fabrication cut list.
Can I use it for a pole barn metal roof?
Yes, for panel and material planning on a simple roof. It does not design the pole-barn framing or purlin spacing.
What is the minimum slope for a metal roof?
There is no one minimum for all metal roofing. Published examples range from 3:12 for some snap-lock standing-seam systems to 1:12, 1/2:12 or lower for certain mechanically seamed systems. Use the exact panel specification.
How many screws do I need for a metal roof?
Screw quantity and placement depend on the panel profile, substrate, wind design and manufacturer's tested fastening pattern. The calculator provides only an editable planning count, not an installation fastening schedule.
How far apart should standing seam clips be?
Use the spacing required by the exact tested roof assembly. Clip spacing can change with substrate and wind-uplift classification, so the calculator requires you to enter that value rather than choosing it for you.
Does this calculator include trim?
Yes. It estimates ridge/hip, eave, rake and manually entered valley trim, then converts the total footage into whole trim pieces using an editable piece length and allowance.
Does the calculator include underlayment?
Yes. It divides the roof surface area by the effective coverage per roll. Enter the installed coverage for the underlayment approved for your metal roofing system.
Does the calculator work for metal shingles?
The material takeoff is designed primarily for long metal panels rather than modular metal shingles. For a metal-shingle project, use the manufacturer-specific module coverage and a product-specific takeoff. The cost ranges in the wider metal-roof market also differ from panel systems.
