    Overhangs & material allowance
    Include roof overhangs?
Overhangs increase the projected roof footprint before the slope factor is applied.
    Material allowance
The allowance is shown separately from actual roof surface area. It is not a universal material requirement.
    Quick answer

Roof area is the actual sloping surface of the roof, not just the horizontal footprint seen from above. For a simple roof with one uniform pitch, calculate the projected roof area and multiply it by the pitch factor. This roof area calculator does that automatically and can also handle overhangs, metric or imperial units, multiple rectangular roof sections and a roof surface area you already know.

How to Use the Roof Area Calculator

The calculator gives you four ways to work because people do not always start with the same measurements. Use the method that matches the information you already have rather than trying to convert everything manually first.

    1. Choose your calculation method. Start from building dimensions, a known plan area, multiple roof sections or a known roof surface area.
    2. Select US/Imperial or Metric. You can calculate roof area in square feet or use the tool as a roof area calculator m2 when working in metric.
    3. Enter the roof dimensions. For the Building Dimensions method, enter the horizontal building length and width. Use the overhang settings if the roof extends beyond those wall dimensions.
    4. Enter the roof slope. You can use pitch x:12, angle, rise and run, or slope percentage. A flat roof does not need a slope input.
    5. Read the actual roof surface area. The result panel also shows projected area, area added by slope, roofing squares, pitch factor, equivalent pitch and the metric equivalent.

If you need to calculate the roof pitch before using the area tool, use our main Roof Pitch Calculator. For a quick conversion between pitch and degrees, see the Roof Pitch Chart.

    Roof Area Formula

For a simple roof where all of the roof planes have the same pitch, the basic relationship is:

    Core roof surface area formula
roof surface area = projected roof area × pitch factor

The projected roof area is the horizontal area directly beneath the roof when viewed from above. For a rectangular building without overhangs:

    Projected area
projected area = building length × building width

The pitch factor converts that flat projected area into the actual sloping area:

    Pitch factor
    pitch factor = √(1 + (rise ÷ run)²)
    roof surface area = projected area × √(1 + (rise ÷ run)²)

If the slope is entered as an angle instead of rise and run, the same factor can be written as:

    pitch factor = 1 ÷ cos(roof angle)

This is why a roof area calculator with pitch produces a larger result than simply multiplying building length by building width. As pitch increases, the roof surface becomes longer relative to its horizontal projection.

Projected Roof Area vs Roof Surface Area

These two values are related but they are not interchangeable.

    Projected / plan area

The horizontal footprint of the roof when viewed from directly above. A 40 ft × 30 ft rectangular footprint has a projected area of 1,200 ft².

    Roof surface area

The actual sloping surface that follows the roof pitch. For the same 1,200 ft² footprint at 6:12, the sloping area is about 1,341.6 ft².

The main result in this roof surface area calculator is the sloping surface area. We also show the projected area so you can see exactly how much area the roof pitch adds.

Worked Example: 40 ft × 30 ft Roof at 6:12 Pitch

Suppose a simple rectangular roof covers a 40 ft × 30 ft building and every roof plane uses a 6:12 pitch. There are no overhangs in this first example.

    Step 1: projected area
    40 ft × 30 ft = 1,200 ft²
    Step 2: pitch factor
    √(1 + (6 ÷ 12)²) = 1.1180
    Step 3: actual roof area
    1,200 × 1.1180 = 1,341.6 ft²
Result: the roof surface area is approximately 1,341.6 ft², which is about 124.64 m² or 13.42 roofing squares.

This is the same geometry used by the roof pitch area calculator, roof slope area calculator and sloped roof area calculator modes: the slope changes the multiplier, not the horizontal footprint itself.

    Roof Pitch Factor Table

The table below shows how common roof pitches change the surface area relative to the projected footprint. Multiply your projected area by the factor shown.

Roof pitch Angle Pitch factor Surface increase over plan area Area from 1,000 ft² plan
    2:129.46°1.01381.38%1,013.8 ft²
    3:1214.04°1.03083.08%1,030.8 ft²
    4:1218.43°1.05415.41%1,054.1 ft²
    5:1222.62°1.08338.33%1,083.3 ft²
    6:1226.57°1.118011.80%1,118.0 ft²
    8:1233.69°1.201920.19%1,201.9 ft²
    10:1239.81°1.301730.17%1,301.7 ft²
    12:1245.00°1.414241.42%1,414.2 ft²

Values are geometric conversions. They do not include overhangs, dormers, openings, waste or product-specific installation requirements.

If you specifically need a 4/12 pitch roof area calculator, the factor is approximately 1.0541. That means 1,000 ft² of projected area corresponds to roughly 1,054.1 ft² of sloping roof surface.

    How Overhangs Change Roof Area

Building dimensions usually describe the wall footprint, but the roof often extends beyond those walls. If you want the full roof surface, those overhangs need to be included before the pitch factor is applied.

With the Same on all sides option, the calculator adds the overhang to both ends of the length and both sides of the width:

effective length = building length + 2 × end overhang
effective width = building width + 2 × side overhang

The Separate Overhangs option is more useful when the eave and gable/rake overhangs are different. For a typical gable roof, the eave overhang increases the projected width and the gable/rake overhang increases the projected length.

Example: a 40 ft × 30 ft building with a 12 in overhang on every side has an effective projected size of 42 ft × 32 ft. At 6:12 pitch, the actual roof surface area is about 1,502.6 ft².
Important: if your dimensions already include the roof edges rather than the wall lines, leave the calculator's overhang option at zero so you do not add the same extension twice.

    Gable Roof Area Calculator

For a simple rectangular gable roof with the same pitch on both sides, you do not need to calculate each slope separately. The two roof planes together cover the full horizontal roof footprint, so:

gable roof area = projected roof area × pitch factor

This is why the calculator can work as a gable roof area calculator from the building length, width and pitch alone. If the roof has a porch, extension, cross-gable or another part with a different pitch, use Multiple Roof Sections instead.

    Hip Roof Area Calculator

A simple rectangular hip roof has four roof planes, but if all four planes have the same pitch, its total surface area can still be calculated from the total projected footprint multiplied by that one pitch factor.

In other words, a hip roof area calculator does not need a different surface-area multiplier merely because the roof has four planes. The geometry becomes more complicated when different planes use different pitches, the footprint is irregular, or additional roof forms intersect the hip.

The same principle applies if you searched for a hip roof surface area calculator or hipped roof area calculator. For a simple rectangular uniform-pitch hip, use Building Dimensions. For a more complicated roof, split the roof into sections that can be measured reliably.

    Shed and Lean-To Roof Area

A shed or lean-to roof is one continuous sloping plane. Its projected area is still the horizontal length multiplied by the full horizontal width beneath that plane:

shed roof area = projected length × projected width × pitch factor

Use the Shed / Lean-to option when you need a shed roof area calculator. Unlike a symmetrical gable roof, you do not halve the building width to find the total roof area because the single roof plane spans the full width.

    Flat Roof Area Calculator

A truly flat geometric surface has a pitch factor of 1.0000, so its projected area and surface area are the same:

flat roof area = effective length × effective width

The Flat option therefore works as a simple flat roof area calculator. Real low-slope roofs normally have some drainage slope, so if you need the small geometric increase from that slope, use one of the sloped calculation modes instead of Flat.

Multiple Roof Sections for Complex Roofs

Many homes cannot be represented by one rectangle and one pitch. A house may have a main roof, garage, porch and extension with different dimensions or roof slopes.

In Multiple Roof Sections mode, enter each rectangular projected section separately. The calculator works out each section's own pitch factor and adds the sloping areas together:

    Multiple sections
total roof area = Σ(projected section area × section pitch factor)

This is more accurate than applying one average pitch factor to the entire property when different sections genuinely have different slopes.

Avoid overlapping sections. When breaking a roof into rectangles, make sure the projected areas do not overlap. Double-counting a shared footprint will overstate the result.

    Using a Known Plan Area

Choose Known Plan Area when you already know the horizontal roof footprint but still need to convert it to sloping surface area.

This can be useful when the projected area comes from an architectural drawing, a measured site plan, an aerial takeoff or another mapping tool. Enter that area and the roof slope; the calculator applies the pitch factor directly.

Overhangs in Known Plan Area mode: include them in the plan-area figure before entering it if you want them counted. This mode assumes the area you enter is the full projected roof footprint you want converted.

Google Maps, Google Earth and Satellite Roof Measurements

If you searched for a Google Maps roof area calculator or Google Earth roof area calculator, there is an important distinction to understand. A map or satellite tool can help you estimate the horizontal plan area, but an aerial view by itself does not automatically include the extra surface created by roof pitch.

If you obtain a reliable projected area from an external map or satellite measurement, enter that number in Known Plan Area and then enter the roof pitch. The calculator converts the horizontal area into the sloping roof surface.

This page does not contain a satellite map or polygon-drawing interface, so it should not be treated as a substitute for a dedicated aerial measurement application. Imagery quality, perspective, roof edges and hidden overhangs can all affect remote measurements.

Roof Area in Square Feet, Square Metres and Roofing Squares

Results are shown in practical units so you do not have to perform another conversion after calculating the roof.

    Square feet

US/Imperial mode shows the primary roof surface in ft². If you need a roof area calculator square feet result, this is the default output.

    Square metres

Metric mode reports the primary area in m², and the result panel also provides the metric equivalent when you calculate in feet.

    Roofing squares

One roofing square equals 100 ft² of roof surface. A 1,341.6 ft² roof is approximately 13.42 roofing squares.

    Cross-checking units

The calculator converts all measurements internally before applying the geometry, so mixed display units do not change the underlying result.

What Does the Material Allowance Mean?

The optional 5%, 10%, 15% or custom allowance is deliberately kept separate from the actual roof area.

    planning area = actual roof surface area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

For example, an actual roof area of 1,500 ft² with a 10% allowance gives a planning area of 1,650 ft².

The allowance is not a statement that every roof needs that percentage of extra material. Valleys, hips, cuts, layout, material type, product dimensions and installer practice can all change the quantity required. Use the actual roof surface area as the geometric result and treat the allowance only as a planning figure.

    Known Surface Area Mode

If the roof has already been professionally measured, choose Known Surface Area. In this mode, the calculator does not apply a pitch multiplier because the number you entered is already the sloping surface area.

This mode is useful for converting between square feet and square metres, checking roofing squares, or adding a separate planning allowance without altering the measured area.

What the Roof Area Calculator Does Not Include

The tool calculates geometric roof surface area from the dimensions you enter. It does not automatically subtract or add every feature that may exist on a real roof.

    • dormers, turrets or curved roof surfaces unless you measure them as separate suitable sections;
    • skylights, roof windows, chimneys or other openings;
    • valley and hip cutting waste;
    • material coverage, laps, exposure or bundle quantities;
    • structural loads or framing design;
    • solar-panel setbacks, shading or usable solar layout area;
    • rainwater catchment, gutter sizing or drainage design.

If you need a structural framing dimension rather than surface area, our Rafter Length Calculator is the more appropriate tool.

    Roof Area Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate the area of a roof?

For a simple roof, calculate the horizontal projected area and multiply it by the roof pitch factor. For a rectangular footprint, projected area is length × width. The pitch factor is √(1 + (rise ÷ run)²). This gives the actual sloping roof surface area.

Is roof area the same as house square footage?

Usually not. House floor area and roof plan area may differ because of overhangs, attached structures and building shape. The sloping roof surface is also larger than its horizontal footprint whenever the roof has a pitch greater than zero.

Can I calculate roof area from pitch?

Yes. A pitched roof area calculator uses the roof pitch to determine the pitch factor, then multiplies that factor by the projected roof area. You can enter x:12 pitch, angle, rise and run or slope percentage in this calculator.

Does a steeper roof have more surface area?

Yes, when the horizontal footprint stays the same. For example, a 6:12 roof has a factor of about 1.1180, while a 12:12 roof has a factor of about 1.4142. The steeper roof therefore has more sloping surface over the same plan area.

How do I calculate roof area with overhangs?

Add the horizontal overhangs to the projected dimensions before applying the pitch factor. If the roof extends 1 ft beyond both ends, add 2 ft to that dimension. The calculator's advanced overhang controls do this automatically.

Can this calculate the area of a hip roof?

Yes, for a simple rectangular hip roof where every plane has the same pitch. The total surface area is the projected footprint multiplied by that common pitch factor. Use Multiple Roof Sections if the roof has different pitches or an irregular layout.

Can this calculate the area of a gable roof?

Yes. The Gable option is designed for that purpose. For a simple rectangular gable with one pitch, the two slopes together correspond to the full projected footprint multiplied by the pitch factor.

Can I use this as an online roof area calculator?

Yes. This is a free browser-based online roof area calculator; calculations run from the dimensions you enter and there is no need to install an app.

Can I calculate roof area in m²?

Yes. Switch the calculator to Metric and enter dimensions in metres, centimetres or millimetres where available. The roof area result is shown in square metres, making it suitable when you need a roof area calculator m2.

What is the difference between a roof pitch area calculator and a roof surface area calculator?

They usually describe the same core task when the objective is to convert a projected roof footprint into actual sloping surface area. The pitch supplies the multiplier; the result is the roof surface area.

Can I use satellite measurements with this calculator?

Yes, if another tool gives you a reliable horizontal projected area. Enter that measurement in Known Plan Area and add the correct roof pitch. This calculator does not itself measure polygons from satellite imagery.

Is roofing square footage the same as projected area?

Not on a pitched roof. Roofing square footage normally refers to the actual sloping roof surface. Projected area is the horizontal footprint. The two are the same only when the pitch factor is 1.0000.

Should I add 10% to the roof area?

Not automatically. A percentage allowance can be useful for planning, but the correct extra quantity depends on roof complexity, material, layout, cuts and product instructions. That is why this calculator shows the allowance separately from the actual geometric roof area.
